UNDERSTANDING THE SAINTS: WHO ARE THEY?
"They were not perfect people. They were sinners—like you and me. What made them saints was not the absence of struggle, but their willingness to allow God to work in them.
They listened to the Word of God. They were nourished by the sacraments. They allowed
grace to shape their lives. And through that grace, they bore fruit—often quietly, sometimes in remarkable ways.
Here at Sts Peter and Paul Old Cathedral, we are especially blessed. We are entrusted with
the sacred relics of saints whose lives spanned centuries, cultures, and vocations:
apostles and theologians, religious and martyrs, young people and founders, even
saints from our own land.
Their presence here is not accidental. It is a reminder that the Church is alive rooted in history yet still speaking to us today. I must admit that whenever I spend time before these relics, I am struck by how ordinary their lives often appear. And yet, through prayer, fidelity, and perseverance,
God did something extraordinary with them.
At times, their witness challenges me. At other times, it consoles me. It reminds me
that holiness is not about achieving greatness, but about daily faithfulness - about saying “yes” to God again and again, even when the road is hard or unclear."
